Standard 9: Teachers are able to evaluate themselves. The teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of his or her choices and actions on pupils, parents, professionals in the learning community and others and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally.
Rationale: During EDT 656 I wrote an action research paper and in that paper was a reflection section. In the reflection part I evaluated myself as an educator. I also reflected on how students did when they used flashcards or the online game to help them memorize their multiplication facts from 0 – 12. This was important to me as a teacher because it allowed me to understand what method the students enjoyed and improved their multiplication facts better with. It also helped me shape my lesson plans for the future. As a result, my lesson plans will now be what best engages and improves the students’ learning with multiplication facts and that will be a direct benefit fot the students. Therefore, the students will have more facts memorized and will do better in math.
KSD: 9.K.3 The teacher is aware of major areas of research on teaching and other resources for professional learning (e.g. professional literature, colleagues, professional associations, professional development activities). During the action research I read numerous articles concerning the use of technology vs flashcards or worksheets to aid in the process of memorizing math facts. However, there wasn’t one article that I found that was solely about the use of an online game vs flashcards to memorize multiplication facts.
9.S.2 The teacher uses classroom observation, information about students, cultural, social, and philosophical frameworks, and research as sources for evaluating the outcomes of teaching and learning and as a basis for reflecting on and revising practice. During my action research I used surveys, observations and tests to review how students did while practicing their multiplication facts using flahscrds or the online game. After evaluating the results I decided what method was best to help students learn their mutliplciation facts.
9.D.2 The teacher is committed to reflection, assessment, and learning as an ongoing process. While doing my action research I reflected on what method was best in helping the students and how I was going to implement it into my classroom. Knowing that the majority of my students come into my class not knowing their multiplication facts I wanted to provide a means to help them. After doing the action research I now have a better understanding of what method will best help my students memorize their multiplication facts.
