Standard 4
Teachers know how to teach.
The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies, including the use of technology, to encourage children's development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.

Evidence:

Rationale:
The jeopardy review for fractions was done at the end of the unit. It was used as a review before the unit test. On the review were adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing and potpourri questions. All the questions started out basic and then advanced to more sophisticated problems. The students worked each problem out individually, then with their group and last with the whole class. Each group was competing against the other.

The fraction review was important to me as a teacher because it allowed me to make sure the students understood the material that had been taught and if there was any area that needed to be re-taught. It also permitted me to observe if the pacing of the material taught was too fast, too slow or just right. For example, if the majority of the students knew an answer I knew that I went too slow covering that topic. This was also helpful for the students to have a day of review in the form that they enjoyed and were willing to participate in. It also allowed the students to be aware of what would be presented on the unit test. After doing this review I saw that the students performed better on the test compared to when I didn’t do the review.

KSD:
4.K.2 The teacher understands principles and techniques, along with advantages and limitations, associated with various instructional strategies (e.g. cooperative learning, direct instruction, discovery learning, whole group discussion, independent study, interdisciplinary instruction).
Individually the students had to solve each question that was selected. They then had to work with their group to check their response. After a group gave their answer we discussed the question as a whole class.

4.S.2 The teacher uses multiple teaching and learning strategies to engage students in active learning opportunities that promote the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance capabilities and that help students assume responsibility for identifying and using learning resources.
The multiple strateigies I used in this lesson, stated above, connected students to their own learning and then group learning. The students were able to take what they learned thoughout the unit and critically think and problem solve the fraction questions in the review.

4.D.1 The teacher values the development of students’ critical thinking, independent problem solving, and performance capabilities.
The review involves the students to critically think and independently solve the fraction problems. I allowed enough time for the students to solve each problem which demonstrates that I value each students performance capabilities.
