Standard 3 Teachers understand that children learn differently. The teacher understands how pupils differ in their approaches to learning and the barriers that impede learning and can adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs of pupils, including those with disabilities and exceptionalities.
Rationale: In this lesson the students went to the computer lab and went to the first website about simple machines. On this website the students picked from a list of objects and then had to decide if the object was a simple machine or not. They then checked their anwer and if they found a simple machine they recorded that machine in a chart under what simple machine it was. After they found 5 examples of each simple machine they moved to the next website. The next website the students had to pick from the garage or a part of a house to work in. In the section they picked they had to identify a simple machine, what it was used for and what simple machine it is. After they get the second question right there is an explanation with diagrams of why that object is that simple machine. Then they continue picking objects until they fill out their graphic organizer for one of each of the six simple machines in the garage, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom.
This lesson was important to me as a teacher because it allowed me to see whether the students could identify what simple machine each object was by how faster they completed the graphic organizer. If they completed it fast then they understood all six simple machines and how to identify them. The students enjoyed this lesson because it allowed them to access their prior knowledge of simple machinces, work at their own pace and identify what machines they use. After finishing this lesson the students had a better understanding of how to identify what objects were what simple machine. They were also able to communicate with their peers more about each simple machine after the lesson than before the lesson.
KSD: 3.K.1 The teacher understands and can identify differences in approaches to learning and performance, including different learning styles, multiple intelligences, and performance modes, and can design instruction that helps use students’ strengths as the basis for growth. I clearly understand the different approaches to learning by using the different websites and having the students record their simple machines in a graphic organizer. I also have the students work on this lesson plan by themselves and work at their own pace. I have them use websites that are very visual and give them direct feedback.
3.S.1 The teacher identifies and designs instruction appropriate to students’ stages of development, learning styles, strengths, and needs. Since the requirements of the simple machine lesson plan were created around the benchmarks for 6th grade this is grade level appropriate. Also, having the students pick any object and then from there identify if it is a simple machine allows the students to have free choice of what objects they pick.
3.D.1 The teacher believes that all children can learn at high levels and persists in helping all children achieve Success. Being able to look at multiple objects from a list and convey which ones are simple machines requires a high level of thinking. It also allows me to hold each student to a high level of thinking while being able to adapt the lesson for each individual student. Since there are so many objects to chose from there are objects that are harder to identify than others.
